Basilica of the National Shrine

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. stands out as a symbol of Catholicism in America. The idea of a national shrine was first conceived in 1909. Eleven years later, the cornerstone was laid for the largest Catholic Church in North America and one of the ten largest churches in the world today.

In 1959, the Knights of Columbus donated $1 million for the construction of the Shrine's majestic 329 foot 56 bell "Knights Tower". In the 1980's, the Knights established a Knight staffed usher ministry as well as a $1 million memorial endowment to promote Marian devotion and to preserve and maintain the Shrine's structure and annual operation.

In 2006, the Knights donated $1 million for the 3,780 square foot mosaic Knights of Columbus Incarnation Dome in the Shrine's Great Upper Church. This donation continues the Knights historic relationship with the National Shrine as the preeminent pilgrimage site in the United States.
